My Mac charger wont work.?

I bought my mac 7 months ago and the charger wont work, I called customer services but they told me to take it to an apple store, I didn't purchase apple care, I wonder, since I bought my mac recently would they give me the charger for free or I have to pay the freaking 80 dollars for a new one.
